About the Video
DISJOINT was a very quick project, but took a lot of work. It was completed for a University assignment. The brief was simply "the animated document", so as long as it told a story, it was useable. I played with a lot of ideas and had a few concepts, but didn't have the time to complete them adequately.DISJOINT was inspired by Hazel Ray, the actress behind the lead character, and her amazing Mouthtrumpet skills. The soundtrack is entirely her doing, recorded on a microphone, and dubbed over the top. Since discovering these skills I knew I had to put them to use in a video somewhere, and since time was against me for any other project I intended making, I decided to use it with DISJOINT.
The story is very basic. Nothing much happens, it is all visual. DISJOINT tells the story of an individual who is "disjointed" from reality, living in their own world, as symbolised by the black and white backdrops. I intended to make this video highly stylistic, and while it is jerky, feel this only adds to the "disjointed" effect I intended to create, and while it was my first attempt with frame-by-frame photographic stop motion, I feel it was a very good experiment and has taught me what can be achieved through photography and post-processing.
The role of the boy on the train was simply to stop the video. Everyone else is in black and white, but as soon as someone intervenes, they become part of the "disjointed" world and become coloured. I thought this was an interesting and simple was to show who and what affects the "disjointed" world. I would have loved to have made this a longer project and expanded on the "disjointed" world, but did not have the time to shoot or edit any more footage as well as working to a time limit.
Each frame of the video was made individually. The background was recorded with a camcorder, and then photographs containing the characters were imposed onto the scene frame by frame. It was time consuming and took a lot of patience to cut around the characters for every single frame, but gave a very effective result.
In the future I'd love to try this style again, hopefully with a cleaner result. I found working with photography a very interesting take on animation and thought it was highly effective.
